Tennis pro Borna Ćorić from Croatia landed a historic victory at the ATP Masters in Cincinnati/Ohio.
The 25-year-old, only 152nd in the world rankings, defeated number four Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 7: 6 (7: 0) and 6: 2 in the final.
“It's incredible, I enjoyed it.
I actually thought it was the end of the first round for me," said Ćorić, who had beaten Italy's Lorenzo Musetti in the first round and then also knocked out Rafael Nadal, Britain's Cameron Norrie and Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada.
A lower-placed player had never triumphed in a Masters tournament.
Ćorić was out for a year with a shoulder injury.
He had contested his only final at an ATP Masters four years ago.
The favored Tsitsipas praised his opponent for an "incredible comeback after this injury".
On the other hand, he was not at all satisfied with his own performance: »It wasn't fun.
It sucks."
France's Caroline Garcia became the first women's qualifier in tennis history to win a WTA 1000 tournament.
The number 35 in the world rankings defeated the two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic 6:2, 6:4 in the final of the WTA Masters in Cincinnati/Ohio.
It was Garcia's third Masters title after victories in Wuhan and Beijing in 2017.
