"Ali Muhammad? We've gotten used to the inflation of populist decisions"

Attorney Warsaw, who represented Pedro Galban, responded to the Interior Minister's decision regarding the Maccabi Haifa connection: "Discrimination and injustice towards others who have contributed much more to Israeli sports.

It is not appropriate to do anywhere and everywhere.

It is important that the decision be made transparently and based on clear criteria"

The decision of the Minister of the Interior to grant temporary resident status to Maccabi Haifa midfielder Ali Muhammad can certainly cause a feeling of deprivation among other athletes who did not receive such recognition, when this harmed their sports careers and even their personal lives.

One such is Pedro Galban, ex-Bnei Yehuda, who lived here for over a decade and was deported from Israel in 2019 after his residence visa expired.

Attorney Tomer Varsha, the owner of Israel's leading office for immigration and status in Israel, who at the time represented Galban, clarified today in response to the Minister of the Interior's announcement regarding resident status for Ali Muhammad: "First, we congratulate every foreign athlete who contributes to the State of Israel and as a result gains status in Israel .

It is absolutely appropriate that the state take in outstanding and leading foreign athletes and naturalize them in order for them to represent the State of Israel with dignity."

Warsaw Sage: "At the same time, it is important to remember two points. One, it is not appropriate to do anywhere and everywhere, and it is important that the decision to grant citizenship to a foreign athlete is made transparently and based on clear criteria of achievements or potential. It cannot be that a player like Dushan Matovic, who contributed a lot to Israeli football And now his younger son is a top tennis player who can represent Israel well - his request for status will be rejected, as will Pedro Galban who raised four daughters here and was the top scorer among foreign players in Israel, while now Ali Muhammad is receiving residency even though his sporting achievements in Israel are less."

"It is not proper to do anywhere and everywhere."

The lawyer added: "We are in an election period, in which we have become accustomed to the inflation of populist decisions, but the other side of the coin is discrimination and injustice towards others who have contributed much more and over time to sports in Israel. Only clear criteria will allow the appearance of justice and equality, which are the proper norms in a democratic country ".

There were also quite a few angry and stinging reactions on Twitter to the decision of Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, which was interpreted by many as unjust.
