Stefano Domenicali, Managing Director of Formula 1, compares the chances for women in the premier class of motorsport with those of a meteorite impact.

Spa-Francorchamps - Shortly before the end of the Formula 1 summer break, racing series managing director Stefano Domenicali comments on how he sees the future of women in Formula 1.

For his gloomy prognosis, he tries to make a comparison that takes some getting used to.

A British woman is currently the closest to Formula 1 and could inherit the only two women who have ever competed in a Grand Prix race.

Domenicali wants to promote, but sees little opportunity for women

In the future, too, the prospects of seeing a woman during an official Formula 1 Grand Prix are likely to be clouded.

While Stefano Domenicali points out that there are efforts in Formula 1 to pave the way for women, he also admits that he does not expect “a woman to come into Formula 1 in the next five years”.

According to the Formula 1 boss, there shouldn't be a female driver in the near future, "unless something like a meteorite hits," the Italian continued.

Domenicali left it open what exactly the metaphor of the meteorite is supposed to stand for and how strong its impact would have to be in order for what he believed to be impossible to happen.

There is currently some support for female drivers in the W Series, the racing series in which only women are allowed to compete.

The ten races are held on the same weekend in the towns where Formula 1 is currently playing.

But it is also clear that in terms of scope alone, the women's series lags behind the premier class of men - Formula 1 contests 22 races this season.

At the Belgian Grand Prix there is no equivalent of the W Series.

Jamie Chadwick earns super license points in the W Series

At the moment it seems like Jamie Chadwick is a Brit with the best chance of fulfilling her dream of Formula 1.

The rider is dominating the W Series at will and, after back-to-back wins in 2019 and 2021, is back at the top this season.

In the end, she was able to win five of the six races that have been held so far.

Since 2021 there have been super license points in the W Series, which are a prerequisite for a driver's license in Formula 1, Chadwick has already been able to earn laurels there.

In addition, for the third year in a row she has been under contract as a development and test driver with Formula 1 racing team Williams Racing.

Should Chadwick, contrary to Domenicali's prognosis, succeed in actually competing in a Formula 1 Grand Prix, she would succeed two Italians.

Maria Teresa de Filippis competed three times in the 1950s and Lella Lombardi even managed to win a point in 1975 as the first and only woman in Formula 1.

Before and after that, however, there is a great void when it comes to locating female riders at a Grand Prix.
