DFB captain Alexandra Popp will stay with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg.
As the club announced on Thursday, the 31-year-old extended her contract, which originally ran until 2023, until June 30, 2025. The attacker was one of the best players in the tournament at the European Championships in England.
"I'm very happy about the appreciation and feel extremely comfortable at VfL Wolfsburg," said Popp: "When I look back on the last few years, I'm simply at the best club in Germany.
I also see outstanding quality in our team and I really enjoy playing with these girls on and off the field and fighting for more titles.«
Popp is nominated for the Ballon d'Or
Popp has been playing for VfL since 2012, for which she has played 177 times in the league, 32 times in the DFB Cup and 60 times in the Champions League.
So far she has collected a total of 18 national and three international club titles.
In the past season, VfL Wolfsburg won the championship title in the Bundesliga.
With the national team, Popp became Vice European Champion in the summer.
In the final against England she had to sit out injured.
The 31-year-old had missed out on the potential top-scorer award, leaving it to rival Beth Mead.
The 27-year-old Englishwoman, like the VfL striker, scored six goals at the tournament in England, but had more assists.
In 2016, Popp won gold at the Rio Olympics.
"Alex is not only one of the most influential personalities in football in Germany, but worldwide," said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of the VfL women.
The club has "appreciated her great qualities on the pitch and as a leading player for a long time".
Currently, Popp can also hope to win the Ballon d'Or.
There, like national team colleague Lena Oberdorf, she is one of the candidates.
