Maccabi Haifa players react to the Champions League draw (Editor: Lear Spiegel)
Although Maccabi Haifa did not win all six of its games in the qualifiers on the way to the group stage of the Champions League, in a certain sense it can mark V for maintaining a perfect balance - in terms of killing the opponents' coaches.
After Olympiakos and Apollon Limassol fired Pedro Martins and Alexander Zorninger respectively following the losses to the Greens in the qualifiers, the Israeli champions continued the trend of killing off coaches when Diane Stankovic, coach of Red Star Belgrade, announced today (Friday) his resignation.
As you may remember, Maccabi Haifa knocked out the Red Star at the end of a big drama in the capital of Serbia.
The Reds erased a 2:3 advantage of the Greens when they led 0:2 before the break in the rematch, but a goal by Daniel Sondgren and a dramatic own goal by Milan Pavkov in the 90th minute made it 2:2 and sent Barak Bacher's players home.

It seems that the dramatic relegation had a great effect on Stankovic, who decided to end his position at the club after over two and a half years.
The former Serbian midfielder received the first coaching job of his career in Belgrade in December 2019, and he led the club to three consecutive Serbian championships and winning the local cup in the last two years.
However, Stankovic was unable to lead his team to the group stage of the Champions League.
Two years ago the Red Star was eliminated in the third qualifying round in a penalty shootout by Omonia Nicosia, last year they lost to Sharif in the third round as well, and as mentioned this time Maccabi Haifa put an end to their dream.
In the last two seasons, Stankovic managed to lead Red Star to the knockout stages of the Europa League.
In the 2020/21 season the European journey was ended by Milan in the round of 32, last year it was Rangers who eliminated the Serbs in the round of 16.
The dramatic announcement came shortly after the Red Star was drawn to the group stage of the Europa League from the first tier, and it will meet in a particularly intriguing house the French Monaco, the Hungarian Frantzvaros and the Turkish Trabzonspor.
