2022-08-26T13:20:34.354Z

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) will be relegated to the back of the grid at Spa due to new parts introduced on Friday on their single-seaters.

The leader and his runner-up in the championship will not be the only ones to start from the last line this Sunday at the Belgian GP.

Verstappen, who has an 80-point lead before this 14th round, and Leclerc will be accompanied at the back of the grid by Lando Norris (McLaren), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) and Mick Schumacher (Haas), also penalized for the installation of new engine or gearbox elements outside the permitted quota.

The Dutch leader's Red Bull has been fitted with a fourth engine, in addition to the maximum three authorized per season, and an unauthorized gearbox component.

Leclerc, who had already had an engine penalty in Canada, also presents elements beyond the limit on the engine and the box of his Ferrari.

When several drivers are penalized in this way, it is their result during qualifying that makes the difference.

Saturday, on the mythical circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, they will therefore play for the least bad place.

The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), 3rd and 5th in the championship and not penalized, could also take the opportunity to shine on Saturday and Sunday.
