FC Bayern Munich failed to win for the first time on the fourth match day of the Bundesliga.
In a largely one-sided home game with many good chances to score, Bayern played 1-1 (0-1) against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Marcus Thuram (43rd minute) scored the lead, Leroy Sané equalized (83rd).
Even if they went into the break with a deficit, Bayern Munich's dominance in the first half could hardly have been greater.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann's team started early, forced Gladbach to lose the ball quickly, made some impressive combinations and created numerous chances to score.
The south curve of Bayern, which had celebrated its 50th anniversary with a choreography before kick-off (50 years ago Bayern played in the Olympic Stadium for the first time), was able to cheer for a short time.
But two supposed goals by Sadio Mané did not count because Leroy Sané and Mané were placed offside (34th/39th).
Instead, disillusionment followed shortly before the half-time whistle.
Thuram scored with Borussia's first shot on goal because Dayot Upamecano misjudged a liberation by Christoph Kramer and the attempt to clear the ball failed.
Thuram ran alone towards Manuel Neuer, Upamecano dived after him, but the striker stayed calm and deliberately put the ball past Neuer into the net.
Bavaria against summer
Thuram's goal apparently had a lasting effect on Bayern, because the hosts were no longer so dominant at the beginning of the second half.
Gladbach played well in the center and the wingers Sané and Kingsley Coman didn't come into their own as well as they did before the break.
And when Bayern got through, like Thomas Müller (48'), Mané (61') or Sané (64'), goalkeeper Yann Sommer was there with strong saves.
With the substitutions of Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala (68th), the Munich game became more compelling again, but Sommer was now in top form.
Whether Sané (71st), Müller (71st), Alphonso Davies (72nd) or Benjamin Pavard (75th) - the Swiss was always right in his 266th Bundesliga game.
Once Sommer helped the post (77th).
And then the keeper was powerless after all, after a pass from Davies, Sané pushed against Sommer's running direction from 14 meters into the left corner.
Bayern are now tied at the top of the table with Union Berlin, the surprise team won 6-1 at FC Schalke in the afternoon.
Gladbach is sixth with eight points.
