Alberto Díaz returns to the national team to replace Llull's loss

2022-08-28T18:10:07.603Z

The 28-year-old base, ruled out last month by Scariolo, will be able to play the Eurobasket that starts next Wednesday

Alberto Díaz (28 years old, Málaga) was on vacation when the news of Sergio Llull's injury broke just a few days before the start of the Eurobasket.

The Unicaja point guard had been part of the initial list of 22 players with whom the Spanish team had started their concentration last July, but he was discarded by Sergio Scariolo because he was dragging some discomfort and did not get to play any game of preparation.

But now, with the loss of one of the most important players in the team, the coach has decided to rethink his idea and has called Diaz back to join the concentration again, just four days before the European tournament starts.

Scariolo explained at the time of Diaz's dismissal that the decision was due to the player's physical condition.

"Alberto Díaz was not physically well, and although he has been with us more times and will surely be in the future, we want him to finish recovering with more time in a full preseason with his club", the coach reported then, who now celebrates that the player has recovered from the discomfort and can join the team 100%.

“We know that he has been working very well with the club and that he is perfectly recovered and in good shape”, Scariolo highlighted in the announcement of Díaz's reinstatement.

Overcome the physical problems, Scariolo sees in Díaz a player who fits perfectly into the system he wants for the national team and who knows the working mechanisms.

“He has always been part of our team, participating in many concentrations.

He knows our systems, values and principles perfectly”, emphasizes the coach, who makes it clear that Díaz's role will be to fill in for Llull's absence.

“Alberto rejoins to strengthen the point guard position, a position that received another hard blow with Sergio Llull's injury.

We are confident that, supported by his superb work ethic, he can bring his experience and defensive intensity to the team.”

Without Llull, the national team's point guard position was tremendously lame, with only Lorenzo Brown and the very young new RatioPharm Ulm player, Juan Núñez.

In addition to Alberto Díaz, the Girona player Quino Colom was also ruled out by Scariolo this week, two days before the Balearic injury was known.

With the reincorporation of Díaz, Spain currently has 14 players, of which two will have to leave the concentration to leave the final list with 12 members.

It is expected that this Sunday Scariolo will announce the last two discards, among which Alberto Díaz is not expected, but Juan Núñez may be, the youngest player in the squad at only 18 years old, who was not called up for the last match of the national team, yesterday Saturday against the Netherlands,
