Gerland worked for 20 years as a coach in various positions at FC Bayern.
As coach of the second team, he later formed world-class players like Dietmar Hamann, Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Alaba.
Numerous legendary anecdotes arose, especially from the notorious header pendulum, as Gerland's former protégés reported.
As an assistant coach, he assisted Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti as well as Hansi Flick.
After his departure from FC Bayern last summer, Gerland also left the record champions a year before the end of his contract to join the DFB.

The "Tiger" has already won numerous titles as a coach.
However, he has never been to a World Cup.
In Qatar, Gerland will not work again as a scout in the stands, as he confirms, because national coach Hansi Flick ordered him “to be on the pitch too”.
Gerland should sit on the bench and work as close to the team as possible.

"When Thomas played badly, he said: 'Tiger, I can tell you one thing, I'll play well again next week,'" says Gerland.
That is one of the reasons why the cult coach personally prevented Müller's departure to another club.

When asked about the race for the German championship this season, Gerland has a clear opinion.
"There is no way around it, Bayern will be German champions again." He doesn't know who could still pose a threat to the record champions, who are "outstandingly positioned everywhere".
