RJ Barrett agreed this morning (Tuesday) on the extension of his contract in New York and will officially sign a new contract of 120 million dollars for four years.
Thus, the curse of Charlie Ward was finally broken: since 1999 (!), the Knicks have not given a multi-year contract to any rookie they selected in the draft - until Barrett, who averaged 20 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3 assists per game last year.
In recent weeks, the Knicks have been in heated negotiations with Utah regarding Donovan Mitchell, but now it will be more complicated to land the Jazz star in the Big Apple.
According to ESPN, the move "ends weeks of talks and forces both teams, if they want to, to start over. Leon Rose gave Utah a Monday deadline to reach an agreement on the deal or he'll give Barrett a new contract. Talks did intensify over the weekend and into a day Two, but gaps still remain."
The main differences, according to reports, are the Knicks' unwillingness to include Quentin Grimes in a future deal, and disagreement over the number of first-round picks.
Barrett, it was noted, was supposed to be included in the deal: "Without him, the Knicks will have to give up more draft assets than they agreed to. Despite this, neither Utah nor New York rule out the possibility that the talks will resume before the opening of training camps, at the end of September."

According to a source quoted by the "New York Post", the Knicks allow themselves to wait because Utah has no other partner in the trade for Mitchell.
