US Open: Serena Williams wins emotional opening match – and delays her retirement by at least one game

Tennis icon Serena Williams is one round ahead of the US Open - the final tournament of her career. Bill Clinton, Hugh Jackman, Queen Latifah and almost 24,000 fans cheered their victory in the stadium.

Serena Williams has postponed her farewell to the big tennis stage again: The 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner won at the start of the US Open on Tuesday night against Danka Kovinić from Montenegro 6: 3, 6: 3.

Her next opponent is now world number two Anett Kontaveit from Estonia.

"I just wanted to do my best and I always feel so confident on this pitch," Williams said.
