The members of the jury could not agree on the guilt of the Welsh star. A second trial is planned.

Justice will not be served immediately.

The domestic violence trial of ex-Manchester United star Ryan Giggs ended on Wednesday without a verdict: the jury failed to agree on the footballer's guilt in the case which prompted him to resign from his position as Wales manager.

After three weeks of hearings in Manchester (northern England) and 23 hours of deliberations over several days, Judge Hilary Manley sent home the jurors who had to decide on the charges against the 48-year-old ex-player. .

He is accused of violence against his ex-girlfriend Kate Gerville and the sister of the latter as well as behavior of influence.

The various parties will now have to discuss whether or not to convene a possible new trial which, if necessary, would only be held in several months given the congestion of the British courts.

Giggs resigned as manager in June

Giggs had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which date back to a heated argument on Nov. 1, 2020, when police were called to his home.

The one who won two Champions Leagues in the Manchester United jersey was then arrested and then released.

According to the prosecution, Ryan Giggs then attacked Kate Greville and her sister Emma violently, injuring his partner in the elbow and lips.

The accused had assured never to have committed violence against women, evoking an involuntary shock with his ex-partner while they struggled for control of a mobile phone.

He had admitted having been unfaithful with all his successive companions.

As a player, Giggs won 13 Premier League titles and therefore two Champions Leagues with the Red Devils.

The midfielder began his coaching career at Old Trafford, taking over as temporary manager at the end of the 2013/14 season following David Moyes' dismissal, before working as Louis van Gaal's assistant for two years.

He was appointed in January 2018 coach of the Welsh team, which he led to the round of 16 of the last Euro last year.

He resigned in June, saying he did not want the case to disrupt the team's preparation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Welsh eleven's fourth participation in a major competition since the 1958 World Cup.
