You don't hear a story like this every day:
Iranian wrestler Kumail Ghasemi this week finally received the Olympic gold medal from the London 2012 Games, after 10 years.
Ghasemi, and the Russian Biliel Mahov, won the bronze medals in the same games in men's freestyle wrestling in the category up to 120 kg. The gold and silver medals at the same time were won by Artur Taimazov from Uzbekistan, and Davit Mudzmenshvili from Georgia, respectively.
But Metimazov was stripped of gold last year after his retested samples tested positive for banned steroids.
The other finalist, Modzmanashvili, was also disqualified after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) found a banned substance in his samples in January 2019.
Following the unusual case, two bronze medalists will appear in the final ranking, with the Iranian Jasmi and the Russian Mahob now leading the ranking.
Ghasemi received the medal at a ceremony held in Tehran on Thursday, where the chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Iran presented the medal.
The samples that are kept have caused athletes in the Olympic Games to be disqualified quite a few times, when this happened mainly in the weightlifting branch, but two athletes in the same branch and in the same weight category, this is a rare case that we hope will not be repeated.
