The World Athletics Federation published the schedule of the World Championships this weekend, which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, where it became clear that the women's marathon will take place on Saturday.
The one who was disappointed to see the news, is Bracha (Betty) Deutsch, an ultra-Orthodox athlete, who already missed an opportunity to appear in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, because of running on the holy day, and will have to give it up this time as well.
In a post she published on Facebook, Deutsch wrote: "As I quickly scanned the board I saw it clearly - the women's marathon on Saturday. My heart sank. Really?! How could this be? God, have you not tested me enough? On my hardest days this summer, all I could think Budapest and the 2023 World Championship were on it."
"As I sat on my couch, physically exhausted and drained from my day, my mind resumed the many conversations I had on this topic. 'You can't run on Shabbat? What's the big deal? But in my mind there is only one answer.... Shabbat is more important to me than the big race In the world, Shabbat is an expression of mine, a deep commitment to God, a covenant between me and my Creator, a recognition that God runs the world and I am nothing without him," she concluded.
Deutsch's big goal is of course the Olympic Games, where she is expected to receive happy news, after it was recently decided to change the schedule and give the honor to women, on the last day of the Games, so that if she meets the criteria, it will take place on Sunday and she will be able to participate.
