After more than ten years, the American National Football League (NFL) will no longer be broadcast by ProSiebenSat.1.

The RTL Group secured an extensive NFL rights package.

According to the Cologne broadcaster, the contract is valid for a total of five seasons from the 2023/2024 season.

According to the broadcasting group, it offers around 80 live broadcasts per season, which can be seen on the free channels RTL and Nitro as well as on the paid Internet service RTL+.

There will be up to three live games on free TV and one exclusive game on RTL+ per week.

To date, ProSiebenSat.1 has shown 57 NFL games live on television.

American Football second most popular TV sport in Germany

"With the acquisition of the NFL rights, we are strengthening our programs for many years to come," commented RTL Managing Director Henning Tewes.

The announcement goes on to say: "After football, American football is the most popular sport in Germany among the 14 to 49-year-old audience." An average of 1.84 million people last watched the final on ProSieben in mid-February.

The market shares of the NFL broadcasts at ProSieben and the sister station ProSiebenMaxx increased, especially in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, which is important from an advertising point of view.

Losing the rights is a heavy blow for ProSiebenSat.1.

The media company had achieved great success with American football on its stations in recent years and acquired a younger core audience with the show »ran«.

After the Super Bowl previously ran on ARD, Sat.1 reached 0.87 million people when it debuted in February 2012.

Viewership has more than doubled since then.

A statement from the broadcaster said: "We are proud to have told the most successful TV sports story of the past decades with #ranNFL and the support of a loyal, committed and constantly growing football community."

The program also includes the »Germany Game«

In addition to broadcasting the games, RTL is also planning extensive highlight and general coverage across all platforms.

Other content offerings such as special NFL formats for children are also planned.

In addition to the main round, play-offs and the Super Bowl, the program will also include the »Germany Game«.

The NFL announced last winter that it would play one game per season in Germany for the next four years.

This year starts with the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Munich.

From next year, the guest appearance in Germany will also be shown on RTL, when the game will take place in Frankfurt am Main.

Dazn retains rights

In addition to RTL, the streaming service Dazn will continue to broadcast NFL games.

The contract with the NFL has been extended to 2026, with the scope being expanded here as well, the platform announced on Tuesday.

From the 2023/2024 season, Dazn subscribers will be able to see the opening game and two exclusive Sunday games.

So far, Dazn has shown a continuous stream of the league's own TV channel NFL Network, the Super Bowl, some individual games and the popular conference show NFL RedZone and its German equivalent NFL ENDZN.
