Eintracht Frankfurt made its debut in the UEFA Youth League: the team led by head coach Damir Agovic drew 1-1 (0-1) against the well-known talent factory Sporting Lisbon, who reached the quarter-finals last year.

The setting in the Dreieich sports park was perfect: 1,100 spectators, including the management team of Eintracht, came to the premiere of Eintracht in the UEFA elite youth competition at 12 noon on Wednesday.

And thanks to a strong second half, they could be proud of the SBU, whose team coach Damir Agovic had put together from players from the Hessenliga team, the U19s and the U17s.

Youth League premiere of Eintracht Frankfurt succeeds – draw against Sporting

Because the Portuguese were not older, but significantly more experienced than the youngsters from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Any examples?

Captain Dario Essugo worked the central midfield almost alone in a 4-3-3.

The 17-year-old has been playing for Sporting for nine years and could become one of the legitimate successors of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo or Nani.

They were all trained by the 19-time Portuguese champions.

Why is something similar for Essugo?

Already at 16 he made his debut for the first team in the Champions League at Ajax Amsterdam.

Its market value is one million.

According to transfermarkt.de, Rodrigo Ribeiro is also said to be worth as much at the moment.

He is also only 17 and has already played in Portugal's first division.

The center forward gave the Portuguese the lead and scored a direct shot from eight meters from a completely free stand (10').

Sporting's captain has already played in the Champions League

Sporting had once again played Eintracht apart.

Especially in the first round, the guests in the Dreieich sports park were the better team: more mobile, more robust, faster and more playful.

But maybe a bit too playful in the last third, which is why the Agovic team had to allow few clear chances, but only very rarely emanated danger.

It got better in the second half, in which Agovic hadn't changed the 4-3-3, but gave his team the right tools.

Frankfurt played more offensively, pressed the opponent better, had significantly longer possession times and thus came to a deserved equalizer through left winger Gianluca Schäfer, who only had to push in after brilliant preliminary work from Nacho (62nd).

U17 goalscorer Anas Alaoui auditions

Bitter for the game - and probably also for Eintracht: The Armenian referee was not always in control of the situation, first Schäfer denied a penalty kick (65th) and in injury time Frankfurt a hand penalty.

As a result, the upset Louis Kolbe was thrown off the pitch.

Agovic and his assistant coach Ervin Sekela used the game to give the U17s junior Awusi, Derek Osei and striker Anas Alaoui time to play.

The trio integrated seamlessly into the team during the second half.

Eintracht will continue next week at Olympique Marseille.

Only the group winners qualify for the round of 16, the runners-up can find their way there via play-offs.
