Gobert rescues France and Doncic throws to Slovenia

The French center has 20 points and 17 rebounds against Turkey and the NBA star has 35 points and five assists against Belgium heading into the quarterfinals. Germany eliminates Montenegro

Only an imperial Rudy Gobert rescued France from the hole they had gotten into and launched their team into the Eurobasket quarterfinals with a colossal performance in Berlin against the warlike Turkey: 20 points and 17 rebounds, seven of them in attack, for command a long-suffering 86-87 victory after extra time.

Ataman's team had the game in hand at the end of the last quarter, with an advantage on the scoreboard and two free throws and possession ahead, but they got tangled up in a bad way and left the door open for Gobert to have a feast.

France advanced to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of the duel between Serbia and Italy on Sunday (6:00 p.m.) on Wednesday.

The French team hung on Gobert's 2.15m in a full blast start.

The tower of the Minnesota Timbewolves ruled in both hoops, a toothache for Sengun, while Yabusele gave Sanli a hard time.

The 0-7 start submitted to a Turkey orphan of the injured Larkin, without air in attack, very unsuccessful in often forced shots (first basket after four dry minutes) and especially erratic in triples (the first hit came in the eighth try).

France was comfortable (4-13, 11-18, 17-31) and coach Collet turned the wheel of changes: Fall inherited the intimidation in the paint with his 2.18m, Heurtel added from outside and Poirier inside.

Turkey had the outburst left and two triples by Tuncer and Osman tightened the score before the break (35-43).

And suddenly, France went dark.

Turkey tightened their belts and the match turned into a succession of failures in both areas, with the score frozen at 44-49 for more than three minutes and the defenses a body above the attacks.

Tuncer turned on from the triple and the Turkish troop changed the script of the film.

Ataman's boys ran and ran against the French pie: 19-0, only six French points in the third quarter, seven and a half minutes without taking a basket to their mouths and a 22-6 partial in that stretch.

France was on the ropes until Gobert emerged again and the blood returned to the veins of a dead team (57-56).

The duel turned into a three-point contest starring M'baye, Osmani, Fournier and Sanli.

The match continued on the path of exchanging blows and there Turkey had success on their fingers.

There were 12 seconds left when an unsportsmanlike Luwawu-Cabarrot gave Ataman's men the key to victory: two free throws and a possession when he led 77-75.

But Osman missed his two attempts (he already missed two decisive ones in the 2019 World Cup against the United States), the team then lost the ball and Gobert ended up crushing the hoop to go into extra time.

That was already the territory of the French center, omnipresent on the rebound, a magnet for each ball.

Turkey responded with triples from Osman and Korkmaz, but Gobert had made the match his own.

France suffered the last straw until a last ball stolen by Tarpey to land in the quarterfinals.

Doncic and only Doncic

Slovenia's victory against Belgium (88-72) had only one name, that of Luka Doncic, author of 35 points and five assists to send the reigning champions to the quarterfinals.

Ukraine or Poland awaits them there, who will play the square on Sunday (12.00).

The star of the Dallas Mavericks caught the first triple with that dance of the ball between his legs and the success of a surgeon and opened the floor to dance many times alone.

They are all supporting actors in Doncic's film, Beginning and End of Slovenia.

For better and for worse.

There are attacks by his team in which there is only one pass, that of the player who sets the ball in motion from the baseline to the hands of the general captain.

The rest is up to you to make the shot while the others watch.

Slovenia down?

Doncic signed a statistic of 7 of 15 in shots of two, 4 of 10 in triples and 9 of 10 in free throws.

There were 11 points in a first quarter in which he played every second to put land in between.

Belgium stretched their resistance with quick ball movement and a collective sense of play against soloist Doncic.

The score served the Belgian team to tighten the result by more than one arreĂłn.

For example, to get ahead in the fourth quarter, 63-64.

Although the omnipresent Doncic responded to each shake with the same argument, an overflowing talent for the individual play.

A double-edged sword because he often chokes on the ball and the team is reduced to one man.

He raises the ball, passes, shoots and accumulates fouls, a circumstance that brings out more than one brush on the court.

Schroder and much more

Under Dirk Nowitzki's retired number 14 jersey atop the Mercedes Benz Arena, Germany overcame a final scare to defeat Montenegro (85-79) and reach the quarterfinals.

They will play against Antetokounmpo's Greece or the Czech Republic, who face each other this Sunday (20.45).

Schröder (22 points and 8 assists) commanded the operations of a very choral group.

Germany is your base and much more.

A supportive team, which closes the rebound with a clenched jaw (only two offensive sacks by Montenegro in the entire first half), defends as a block and shares many balls (19 assists).

The bike is turned on by Schröder, the game director who is a free agent after his time at the Houston Rockets.

His one-handed mate in the second quarter was the image of the match in Berlin.

The boy is a junk with springs.

Germany doubled Montenegro at half-time (48-24) and the match seemed resolved, but Montenegro turned on the fan from the perimeter: 12 triples, five of them by Perry, a point guard signed by Unicaja who led the reaction.

His 25 points and Dubljevic's 22 forced Schröder to take back the reins of the game and close the pass to the quarterfinals.
