VfB Stuttgart is getting well-known reinforcements, including a former Bayern star in Philipp Lahm.

He is supported by another world champion.

Stuttgart – As VfB Stuttgart announced on its website, the club is getting reinforcements for the sporting structures on board.

The former Bayern captain Philipp Lahm is also used, who after his active career in 2016/17 was already being discussed at Säbener Straße for the post of sporting director.

In Stuttgart, Lahm will support Sami Khedira and Christian Gentner.

Lahm wants VfB, who "win more often than they lose"

Khedira and Lahm are to support Alexander Wehrle, chairman of the Swabians, with their expertise and experience as sporting advisors.

A task that is new to Lahm, but which he says he is very much looking forward to.

The world champion captain of 2014 also wants to give something back to the people of Stuttgart with his expertise.

“Back then, VfB gave me the opportunity to gain a foothold at the highest level.

That was important in order to celebrate successes elsewhere.

I would now like to share this experience with VfB,” said Lahm.

The former Munich resident has set high goals for his new employer, or at least higher goals than he has been able to achieve in recent years.

"VfB should be a club [...] that trains talent from the region and that wins far more often than loses," Lahm is quoted as saying on the Stuttgart website.

The Swabians last had more victories than defeats in the Bundesliga in the 2017/18 season.

On January 1, 2023, Christian Gentner, who is currently still lacing his football boots for FC Luzern in Switzerland, is also set to join a more successful path than last time as a licensed match manager.

Lahm active at the DFB after Bayern's cancellation

For Philipp Lahm, the commitment in Stuttgart will be the first with a club after he ended his active playing career.

Much earlier, more precisely during his last season as a player in 2017/18, he was associated with the post of sports director at Bayern Munich.

At the time, Lahm politely declined the opportunity in Munich.

In an interview with

Stern

magazine in 2017, the honorary captain of the national team stated "that Uli Hoeneß is still too energetic to let go", which ended the discussion for Lahm.

In another capacity, however, he remained connected to football, including serving as a DFB ambassador with the national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He will continue to work for the DFB in the future, so he is head of the organizing committee for the EM 2024 in Germany.

However, Lahm personally rejects a trip to Qatar for the Winter World Cup.
