VfL Bochum has released head coach Thomas Reis and his assistant coach Markus Gellhaus from their duties.
This was announced by the Bundesliga soccer club early Monday afternoon.
The 48-year-old Reis took over the coaching job in Bochum from Robin Dutt in September 2019 and led the traditional club from the Ruhr area back to the Bundesliga as second division champions in 2021.
In the following season, Bochum managed to stay up under Reis.
After a transfer summer in which many top performers left the club, Bochum started the current season disastrously.
After six matchdays, VfL is pointless and bottom of the table.
"It should be clear to everyone that this decision is not easy for us," explained Bochum's sporting director Patrick Fabian.
"Thomas Reis has a connection to the club and the city that goes beyond the successful past three years." Before the season there had been negotiations about a contract extension with Reis, but these were deliberately left alone in order to focus on the sport to steer.
Recently there had been rumors about Reis moving to local rivals Schalke 04, who under coach Frank Kramer had to wait until the last matchday for their first win of the season – a 3-1 win against Bochum.
