After the defeats on the first day of the game, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen have returned to the Champions League.
Eintracht won in Marseille, the Werkself initially missed the best scoring chances against Atlético – and then won in the end.
Eintracht Frankfurt has arrived in the Champions League.
Last season's Europa League winner won the second group game at Olympique Marseille and again has a good chance of reaching the round of 16.
Things had recently gotten restless at Eintracht after two competitive defeats in a row, and the team gave a good response to that.
In the first half, the game was balanced for long stretches, Marseille had slightly better chances to score.
Coincidence helped the guests when Jesper Lindström scored the opening goal, Marseille's Rongier falsified an unsuccessful pass from Kolo Muani in Lindström's run and the Dane fired from twelve meters (43rd minute).
After the break, Olympique got better and pushed for an equalizer.
But Frankfurt also remained dangerous, Daichi Kamada supposedly scored the second goal, but was just offside (81st).
During the VAR review phase, Marseille fans set off pyrotechnics, and there had been riots before the game.
It has not been Bayer Leverkusen's season so far, neither in the Bundesliga nor in the Champions League.
And if additional proof was needed, the 49th minute against Atlético Madrid would provide enough illustrative material:
Patrik Schick was freed by Moussa Diaby in a transition situation, the Czech was free in front of goalkeeper Ivo Grbic.
Last season, the top scorer would have easily scored, but this time his lob bounced off the crossbar.
There was Schick's compatriot Adam Hlozek, again deployed in central midfield, the goal was empty, but his header went to the left post.
But Leverkusen didn't give up, constantly played forward - and was rewarded late.
Robert Andrich scored the lead with a low shot (84'), a little later Diaby caused a collective celebration with his counterattack (87').
