Riots broke out around Eintracht Frankfurt's Champions League game at Olympique Marseille, which was classified as a high-risk game.

After several clashes outside the stadium, supporters from both camps shot pyrotechnics into the other fan blocks before kick-off on Tuesday at the Stade Vélodrome, and the police then positioned themselves in the Frankfurt block.

As the AFP news agency reports, citing the French prefecture, German supporters are said to have shown the Hitler salute in the stands.

Video recordings of the forbidden gesture circulated on social networks in the evening.

Previously, supporters of Marseille had already ignited pyrotechnics and firecrackers in front of the stadium.

After admission, there were provocations in the stands between home fans and supporters in the away block.

On Monday evening, eight people were arrested after a fight in the city center, including a German, according to the local police.

Six more arrests were made on Tuesday.

About 3,000 fans from Frankfurt were expected in Marseille.

The Eintracht supporters had to adapt to strict restrictions, and the authorities issued residence bans for certain areas in the city.

According to the prefecture, the Frankfurt fans were brought in buses from the city center to the stadium "without incident".

Most recently, there were clashes between German and French fans during the 1. FC Köln game at OGC Nice in the Conference League.

Marseille notorious for fan violence

Last year, the fans of Olympique Marseille made negative headlines several times.

In early 2021, supporters violently stormed the club grounds.

In late summer and autumn, the club and its fans were involved in several abandoned games in Ligue 1, and a Europa League game against Galatasaray also had to be interrupted after riots.

For Eintracht, however, the incidents in southern France could have consequences beyond the game.

After storming the pitch in the home game against West Ham United, in which the Frankfurt team managed to reach the Europa League final, Uefa imposed a fine of 80,000 euros.

In addition, the European Football Association had sanctioned Eintracht with a ghost game that was suspended for two years.

The SBU is threatened with being excluded from the audience for the next offense.
