A new era in the EuroLeague: the great former player Dian Bodiroga was appointed today (Wednesday) as the new EuroLeague president.
He replaces the one who was this time the manager of the top basketball factory in Europe, Jordi Bartomeu, who held the position for 22 years and was one of its founders.
The appointment was officially launched after a long wait after it was approved by the management of the organization.
A big fight was around Bartomeu's replacement and it lasted a long time.
The Spanish teams wanted him to continue, most of the others, including Maccabi Tel Aviv, did not want it.
In the end the majority won, but still almost a year passed between the decision and its implementation.
This is also a transition to a new management method.
While Bartumau concentrated all the powers with him, the new structure will be different: Bodiroga will deal with the professional and technical issues and the development of the factory's vision, Marshall Glickman will serve as CEO and deal with the economic issues.
Upon taking office, the new president said: "We are entering a new era.
In the last 20 years, the Euroleague has become a global brand.
Thanks to Jordi and his team.
We are looking ahead to develop the plant and its impact.'
The Serbian Bodiroga, used to be a top player in Europe who broke quite a few records.
At the age of 19, he was already a foreign player in Italy in the Trieste team, and played in three powerhouses: Real Madrid, Panathenaic and Barcelona.
He won three Euroleague titles and two world championships with the national team and three European championships.
Beyond being a great player, Budiruga became famous for not wanting to move to the NBA despite the offers he had.
The one who greatly influenced basketball as a player is now moving to influence it from a managerial position and is becoming one of the strongest basketball players in Europe.
He is 49 years old. The management positions he held: the sporting director of Roma, the vice president of the Serbian Federation, and the director of competitions of the FIBA, a body with which the Euroleague is in an ongoing conflict. Perhaps thanks to him, a solution to the never-ending war between the bodies will finally be found.
