The organizers of the London Marathon, one of the most prestigious events on the circuit, announced on Wednesday that they would open a category for non-binary athletes during the edition which will take place in 2023. Participants will not have to choose between male or female categories but can tick a specific box.
There will therefore be three options offered to participants: male, female and non-binary.
"
We know there are still a lot of changes to make but this one demonstrates our commitment to making London an open event for all
," race director Hugh Brasher said in a statement.
Athletes registered in the elite category, subject to the rules laid down by World athletics, the international athletics federation, will not be able to choose the non-binary category.
On Tuesday, the Boston Marathon announced the creation of a "
non-binary
" category for athletes wishing to participate in the event.
The London Marathon will take place on October 2.
In 2023, the edition will take place in April for the first time in four years.
