Australian rider Richie Porte retired from professional cycling on Tuesday, ending a glittering career that saw him win Paris-Nice and the Tour Down Under twice.
Richie Porte, the 37-year-old runner from the Ineos Grenadiers team, a professional since the age of 24, said on social networks that he had completed a "fantastic journey".
“I never could have imagined, as a young child growing up in Tasmania, that I would be lucky enough to travel the world on my bike, race with some of the best teams in the world of cycling and meet so many people brilliant along the way,” wrote Richie Porte.
"I'm all set to enjoy the next chapter, but what a fantastic journey it has been," he added.
I didn't have a clue at the time but this would be the last time I would sign on before a stage as a professional cyclist.
End of a 13 year chapter of my life & some of the most incredible memories.
