For the Freising Grizzlies, the dream of a final for the German championship against the Bonn Capitals ended.

But the season is not over yet.

Freising/Bonn

– The Freising Grizzlies drove to Bonn last weekend for the semi-finals of the German Softball Championship.

In a best-of-three series against the Capitals, the finalist was played out.

But it turned out that the women bears should be over after just two games.

Saturday started off so well: Freising had been given home rights in the first game and felt right at home on the slightly uneven Capitals pitch.

Although Bonn took the lead with a home run by US import Jessica Goldyn, the Grizzlies turned up the heat in the second inning: Fiona Brosch and Lioba Biswas each hit triples, coach Mariesa Davis brought Biswas home with a base hit.

The young Elisabeth Buchwald, who was beaten home by Lea Salomon and Regina Guth, started as a pinch runner for them.

Freising was in the lead but conceded a run in inning three.

The 3:2 lead only lasted until the fifth period of the game.

That's when Bonn really hit it: first a single run, then another home run, which brought three runners to the finish line.

A pitcher change from Fiona Brosch to Mara Sandner didn't have an immediate effect either, as two more runs from Bonn followed before the Grizzlies were allowed to pitch.

The Bears then followed suit with two runs from Franca Brosch and Mara Sandner, advanced by a sacrifice fly by Rebecca Hillebrand and Bonn pitcher and catcher errors.

In the seventh inning, Freising was able to prevent the Capitals from scoring points, but could not make any more himself.

Final score: 8:5 for Bonn.

After a longer rain break, the second game continued in the late afternoon.

The Grizzlies conceded three outs early in the first inning.

With US pitcher Lexie Petrof, the woman who got along best with the umpire's tiny strike zone and who had only allowed two runs before the semi-finals in the entire Bundesliga season came into play at Bonn.

Freising tried to counter with Tamara Biswas on the mound, but she was handed one ball after the other by the umpire, so that after three runs the Capitals took over Fiona Brosch.

In the fourth section Bonn increased to 4:0.

But when the sun came out in the fifth inning, Freising was able to catch up a little despite two outs: Tamara Biswas and Mara Sandner were brought home by Rebecca Hillebrand.

The final score was 4:2 for the Capitals.

The national cup tournament on the first weekend in October in Hamburg is now waiting for Freising.

Opponents are the Regensburger Legionnaires, who lost their DM semi-finals against Wesseling, the Stuttgart Reds, who qualified in the pre-tournament, and the losers of the DM final, Wesseling Vermins, against Bonn Capitals.

The German Cup winners are allowed to compete in the European Cup.
