The London Marathon will introduce a category for non-binary athletes starting in the 2023 event.
The organizers of the prestigious running event announced that the participants will no longer only be able to choose between the categories for men and women, but will also be able to tick a third box.
"We know there are still many changes to come, but these show our commitment to making London an open event for all," said Race Director Hugh Brasher.
However, athletes who are registered in the elite category and are subject to the rules of the world governing body World Athletics may not select the non-binary category.
The Boston Marathon announced Tuesday that it would introduce a "non-binary" category.
The London Marathon will take place on October 2nd this year.
In 2023, the event is to be held in April for the first time in four years.
