The Eurobasket semifinals will be held tonight (Friday) and even David Blatt, who knows a thing or two about European championships, found himself surprised by the knockout results so far.
In an interview he gave to the "Eurohops" website, he referred, among other things, to the removal of Nikola Jokic, Yanis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic even before the semi-finals.
"It's quite rare that three of the best players in the world come together to a tournament, and at the same time don't even reach the semi-finals," he said.
"In the European game, the best teams win. In the NBA, more often than not, the teams with the best players win. This is the main difference. This is not a criticism - it is simply the game."
Blatt added and explained: "The European game is different in many ways, especially in defense... One or two players can't just take over the game, it can happen in the NBA, but in Europe it's rare. It's one of the things I like the most, it's challenging, interesting, Unexpected".
An unexpected tournament - and there are explanations for that.

The team that has so far impressed Blatt, who won the EuroBasket with the Russian team exactly 15 years ago, is Germany: "It is my favorite right now, it plays the best and most stable basketball and it hosts. Basketball is growing a lot there, and the team's success will only strengthen it." .
When asked about points of similarity between his Russia and current Germany, he replied: "They are better in attack. Our style was a little different. I don't really see similarities, except for the success."
Blatt, who returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv last summer as the chairman of the professional committee, was asked to name one player he was impressed with and went with his new coordinator: "I work at Maccabi, so it's fun for me to see Lorenzo Brown.
He plays great basketball, but I'm subjective.
To be objective, the player who impressed me the most is Franz Wagner from Germany."

Finally, when asked if this is the biggest Eurobasket in history, he said: "It's a great tournament and I really enjoy watching it, but no, I don't think it's the biggest of all. The industry has grown and improved a lot, but it has to be, there have been many great tournaments."
