National player Marco Reus may have been seriously injured in the district derby of the Bundesliga.
The Borussia Dortmund captain twisted his right foot in the game against Schalke 04 after 27 minutes.
In pain, he hit his hand on the lawn before being carried off the pitch after several minutes of treatment.
For years, Reus was one of the problem children of German football.
Again and again, the highly talented offensive player threw out injuries, in addition to a cruciate ligament rupture in 2017, it was mainly the ankles that caused problems.
Around 2014 he tore his syndesmosis ligament in the final game before the World Cup in Brazil and missed the tournament in which Germany ended up taking the title.
There will be another World Cup this year, starting in Qatar on November 20th.
Reus, who started the season strongly as Borussia Dortmund captain, is part of the World Cup-focused squad for the final two Nations League games against Hungary (September 23) and England (September 26).
If he is fit, he could become an important player for national coach Hansi Flick in Qatar.
