Violent football fans, how bad is it really?

A fan expert has now commented and described his point of view.

Berlin – The Corona period was not easy for football fans.

Especially for the supporters who follow their clubs to the furthest corners of the world to show their support at the stadium.

When the arenas were full again, the wishes of many supporters were granted.

The return to the stadium was celebrated, but with it came the negative side.

Football Ultras: Negative sides of the followers

Of course, most of them behave appropriately in the stadiums.

But riots like the cup throw in Bochum in the 2021/2022 season, the storming of the pitch at the end of the season with a bland aftertaste or Bremen fans who stormed the pitch during the season and yelled at Elfer-Hero Gikiewicz from opponent Augsburg are bad examples.

In the 2nd Bundesliga, a Nuremberg fan threw a cup on the head of Darmstadt corner shooter Tobias Kempe.

Unsightly scenes that were even more so in the European Cup.

Fan expert Michael Gabriel sees the recent riots in the European Cup as evidence of a growing willingness to use violence.

"In our opinion, this has become even more important within the ultra groups, and has greater value," said the head of the fan projects coordination office on Deutschlandfunk.

In certain games, supporters for whom the topic of violence has a positive connotation "dominate and set the tone, so to speak," Gabriel explained.

“Fortunately no deaths”: Ultras fan riots get experts

Most recently there had been violent fan riots at the guest appearances of 1. FC Köln in Nice and Eintracht Frankfurt in Marseille.

According to Gabriel, the recent increase in violent incidents at the international level is worrying and "very, very disturbing" in its dimensions.

In his opinion, it was lucky that "there were no deaths" in the two European Cup games in France.
