Eurobasket 2022, one of the highest quality tournaments we have known in European national basketball, comes to an end this evening (Sunday) with the grand final between Spain and France.
Sergio Scariolo's team, which few expected to see in this position considering the squad with which they entered the tournament, are trying to win their fourth title in the last six European Championships after having also done so in 2009, 2011 and 2015.
On the other hand, the tricolor are dreaming of a second gold medal in history, after the previous one was achieved in 2013.
Spain, starring Lorenzo Brown who will join Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of the Eurobasket, erased a double-digit deficit in each of the previous knockout stages of the tournament, knocking out Lithuania, Finland and Germany.
France was twice on the brink of elimination, in the round of 16 against Turkey and in the quarter-finals against Italy, but came back to life and in the semi-finals crushed Poland by 41 points.
The balance in the last five official meetings between the two finalists stands at 2:3 to the Spaniards, with each of the teams passing the other on the way to their victories in the European Championships in the last decade.
Their last meeting in the final was in 2011, when the Spaniards won 85:98.
Two single players from that final are also playing tonight: Rudy Fernandez on one side and Andrew Alvisi on the other.
