“Basta” and melee attrition work
This represents the two key points of the first period of Toulon.
Thanks to scrapings and other ruck counters from Bastareaud, Toulon was able to move forward and thus take advantage of long melee sequences to put pressure on the Clermont game.
A real domino effect launched by "Basta" lasting 15 minutes which installed the Toulon domination.
It was through the scrums and broken arms of the Varois that ASM received two yellow cards, thus leading to their numerical inferiority and the first two tries of Toulon.
Canary in the oven and in the mill
Author of three conversions (35th, 39th, 41st) and three penalties (6th, 9th, 55th), captain Baptiste Serin reassured his teammates.
Omnipresent in the strong phases of Toulon, he also knew how to raise his level to limit the breakage when Clermont launched his comeback in the second act.
His successful penalty following an offside Clermont (55th) is ultimately the action that allowed the Var residents to lock their lead and seal off the aggressiveness and realism of ASM.
Another striking action: this decisive recovery in front of the in-goal of the RCT.
Serin came to the aid of his forwards to prevent the Clermont try (62nd).
The definition of a captain.
Regularity, importance and dominance.
The return of ASM
If the first period was completely missed by the ASM, it is necessary to underline the very good return of the locker rooms of the players of Gibbes who managed to turn the tide.
If the victory on the wire is missing, the Clermontois dominated the second act with long sequences controlled in the 22 meters Var.
A penalty try and two goals from Julien Heriteau (50th) and Lucas Dessaigne (73rd) helped restart the game.
ASM can harbor regrets given their very good second half: the outcome of the match was finally decided in the first 40 minutes of this poster.

FLOPS
Clermont's indiscipline
With 11 penalties conceded in the first period and two yellow cards taken by Jedrasiak (29th) and Ojovan (34th), the Clermontois can only blame themselves for their completely failed start.
In clear numerical inferiority, thirteen against fifteen, the visitors logically could not compete against Toulon who took the opportunity to register two tries accompanied by successful transformations in 5 minutes before the break (35th, 39th).
Still deprived of two players when they returned from the locker room, the Clermontais could not resist the young Gael Dréan who came to conclude the third Toulon try from the first seconds of the second period (41st).
The amorphous defense of Clermont
Clermont's defense didn't always seem very solid and built.
On a huge Auvergne defensive error, Wainiqolo made his speed speak for 40 meters to register the other try (39th) of the first period for RC Toulon.
Same observation after the break when no one came to challenge the game at the foot of West or the easy incursion of Smaili into their camp, the young Gael Dréan took advantage of the spaces left by the Clermont lines to score a new try (41st) .
Even numerical inferiority, Clermont had to be better organized defensively or at least make the effort to communicate.
Rebbadj at fault
After collapsing the Clermont maul on his goal line, Swan Rebbadj left his team outnumbered in the worst of times.
This fact of the game boosted ASM, which immediately went on the offensive, thus scoring a new try in the wake of Julien Heriteau (50th).
A full of confidence that reversed the momentum of the meeting.
The Varois, however, seemed well above against a frustrated Clermont team before Rebbadj's yellow.
If Toulon finally wins the match, it almost cost his team dearly.
