How much does football really affect the society in which it operates?

For the first time in the history of the State of Israel, a large-scale UEFA survey was conducted over the past two years that examined the SROI of football in society (Social Return on Investment).

The survey examined three aspects: the economic level - how the industry and its facilities contribute;

The social level - the effect on education, on the spirit of volunteering, employment and crime;

And the health aspect - how much money does the country save by having active footballers and footballers in regards to illnesses and expenses.

"Israel Today" received the official report that reveals incredible numbers about the impact of the most popular sport in Israel on society. The survey was conducted before the corona virus, and the data was postponed due to the epidemic that stopped the world. Now, when the main data has arrived, it is possible to reach the first and dramatic conclusions about The importance of sports, and football in particular.

43,000 footballers were registered with the association in 2020, when UEFA began to inspect Israeli football. Since then the numbers have increased, and approximately 600 volunteers are additionally registered. These two figures generate no less than 200.23 million dollars for the Israeli economy.

This high amount is made up of several sections that are detailed as follows: 100 million euros, comes from the field of medicine.

Every year, the state is saved more than 300 million shekels in relation to diseases, and here too the division is clear when it comes to heart diseases, cancer, mental illnesses and various orthopedic injuries.

This field has the largest profit, and right after it, with 82.5 million euros, is the economic field.

Here too, the field consists of three sections: facilities, transactions in the field of football and various investments, and job creation.

The third area is the social.

Here the state receives about 18 million euros.

The main subsection is the world of education, where football succeeds in bringing different social circles into the field.

The second section is the decrease in the level of crime, and the third section is the number of volunteers around the game.

From the point of view of Israeli football, the Football Association and the various government ministries, such as the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health, these are revolutionary data that prove the importance of sports to a healthy society.

The association knows how to point out that this year they also intend to cooperate with UEFA and continue to receive the service, which undoubtedly shines a different light on the importance of sports and football in particular.

"Sycamore Call"

Ronit Glassman, manager of business development at the soccer association who led the project for the association, explains: "The survey is part of a variety of services offered by the organization to its member associations in the strategic area, with the aim of growing the industry and providing practical tools to measure the value of the sport.

"Everyone is aware of the broad influence of the football industry on the aforementioned fields, but for the first time it is possible to measure the impact and add a financial value to it, which will allow us to mobilize the relevant resources in the future, and to monitor the nature of the activity we lead in the various arenas, in order to strengthen important fields for the country and society.

Ronit Glassman,

"The figures refer to the number of players registered as of today in the association, and do not take into account the hundreds of thousands of boys and girls who play in popular-community settings.

"It is clear to us that the volumes are high and that their influence is unprecedented in regards to education, values, health and life skills. To this end, the association works in all frameworks with the aim of obtaining an estimate of those involved in the field and increasing the infrastructure to expand the participant base.

"I have no doubt that a thorough examination, as of today, will lead to better results than those presented in 2020. It is a wonderful tool for setting measurable goals and a management tool for examining results," Glassman concluded.

The CEO of the Football Association, Yossi Sharabi, said: "The various government ministries budget for football through the prism of professional achievements only and the success of the industry is measured according to the achievements in the international arena. The study shows the tremendous contribution of football and its influence on a variety of levels. The findings call the government and the Ministry of Culture and Sports "To change the norms of the media and budget the industry according to its true value and contribution and not just according to the achievement dimension. The value of football as a tool for social resilience is significant, prominent and powerful."
