Tiktukno: Summary of the day in sports, 18.9 (Sport1)
On the eve of the opening of the Eurobasket, very few people believed that the Spanish team was able to continue its historic streak and reach the podium for the seventh time in a row.
Of course, no one talked about winning gold.
The betting agencies have placed Sergio Scariolo's team as the sixth candidate to go all the way - after Serbia, Slovenia, Greece, France and Lithuania.
Tonight (Sunday), against all odds, Spain completed a wonderful tournament and lifted the title for the fourth time in its history after 76:88 over France in the final.
In the previous two decades, the Spanish golden generation was talked about again and again - Euroleague stars, NBA stars, unimaginable depth.
This title, on the other hand, is signed by names such as Jaime Fernandez, Xavi Lopes-Arostegui, Dario Brisuala, Alberto Dias and Jaime Pradia, among others.
Above all of them were the brothers Willy Hernangomez (who was chosen MVP of the tournament) and his brother Juancho, and next to them the new player of Maccabi Tel Aviv Lorenzo Brown - a citizen that many did not want his citizenship before the start of the tournament.
He finished it with a place in the top five of the Eurobasket, becoming the first player since 1995 to finish the finals with a double-double (14 points and 11 assists).
Lorenzo Brown, the new Maccabi Tel Aviv player, celebrated the win on his cell phone with his family and then took time to respond to the criticism directed at him at the beginning of the tournament for playing as a citizen of the Spanish national team.
"At the end of the day, we all speak the same language when we're on the field," said Brown, "no matter what your color is or where you're from, we're all brothers and we're all human. Winning the gold medal speaks for itself."
Brown added humorously "I don't need to talk too much now. I smile, sit and enjoy what I'm doing. I've learned a lot of Spanish so far. Next summer I believe I'll speak fluent Spanish for you."
On the other hand, the fact that Brown was not crowned MVP of the tournament caused eyebrows to be raised, and several players including Daron Hilliard from Maccabi Tel Aviv complained about it on Twitter.
"Are you saying that Lorenzo should have been the MVP? Because it seems a little true to me," tweeted Hilliard, who will soon start training with Brown, in response to a tweet by Greek journalist Aris Barkas who wrote that "Lorenzo was robbed", and later added in a correspondence with Hilliard that "the guess Mine is that no one in Europe is yet ready for a naturalized MVP, we agree on that."
Brown turned during the tournament from a controversial figure, to a hero that Spain does not hesitate to embrace - and there was also someone who recognized this as a kind of hypocrisy.
"Those people who were outraged when Lorenzo Brown received Spanish citizenship, please don't cheer and praise him now," wrote guard Dylan Ennis, "don't change their positions when it suddenly becomes convenient."
Alex Renfrew, who previously represented the Bosnian national team, wrote: "
Either way, everyone agrees on one thing: Maccabi Tel Aviv will mainly benefit from Brown's impressive championship, who will now join Ketch's training with a shot of confidence.
"Brown was so off the radar that not even one Spanish team made him an offer," they wrote in "El Mundo" this morning.
"There were initial talks with Real Madrid, but he ended up signing with Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he now comes in a completely different capacity."

France, on the other hand, messed up once again in the biggest class of all - it now stands on a record of a single victory against six losses in the final of the European Championship.
"Spain played great," admitted losing coach Vansen Kola.
"They managed to do most of what we planned to do, on both sides of the court. We didn't play with the same amount of pressure as in the semi-finals, and we lost the gold. We knew our weakness was turnovers, and they scored 35 points off turnovers."
Evan Fournier added: "They were better than us, from start to finish. They had a clear game plan and we failed to implement ours. Too many turnovers. We didn't control the game even for a moment."
"It's a bad feeling," added Mustafa Pal.
"They were better than us, we didn't make adjustments in defense, we lost too many balls. We didn't have anything good tonight, just a bad game and we're to blame. It's not the first time we start games badly, but they were simply better than us."
