Simeone praised Madrid's counterattack, but both goals started on goal kicks

2022-09-19T21:38:24.406Z

The 0-1 against Atlético came after nine passes and 28 seconds, and the 0-2 after a sequence of 21 combinations for one minute

After the defeat in the derby, Diego Pablo Simeone had a nostalgic attack in the press room at the Metropolitano: "The forcefulness is wonderful," he said in reference to Real Madrid's punch.

“Seeing a team that defends low and attacks like that, the truth is that I like it.

It reminds me of the team we had there with Costa, that we came out on a counterattack... And some criticized us for playing defensively.

Oh well…".

However, the two blows with which Madrid had just knocked him down may have seemed like counterattacks, particularly in the last stretch of the plays, but they came from developments chewed up from the rear.

Both goals come from goal kicks, which Militão puts into play towards Courtois, as Carlo Ancelotti pointed out in his appearance, after that of the Argentine: “In the first half, we handled the start from behind very well.

With starts from Thibaut we have scored both goals.

We were comfortable."

It involved two different sequences but with a common initial routine that was well worked out, in which the footballers arranged themselves practically exactly on the field to organize a clean exit through the center.

The first time they do it through Tchouameni, closer to the area, and the second, with Kroos, located a little further away.

From then on, the developments are different: at 0-1, Madrid makes a play of nine passes in 28 seconds, which Valverde suddenly accelerates after the fifth, until Rodrygo Goes culminates it by quickly finishing off the delicate Vaseline that Tchouameni He has deposited him between the penalty spot and the edge of Oblak's small area.

Valverde's 0-2 sequence was more elaborate: 21 passes and a minute, during which time the ball passes several times from one band to another, and even returns at one point to Courtois's feet, after having previously reached to the Uruguayan and close to the opposite area.

This setback, while they amass possession in search of the crack through which to sneak, contributes to the rojiblanca defense moving forward again and freeing up the space behind which Modric sends the ball to Vinicius.

The development is reminiscent of the patience with which Madrid reworked in Glasgow a failed free-kick attempted on the first day of the Champions League against Celtic.

But Modric was covered, and the plan was frustrated in the first point, so Ancelotti's team undertook a sequence of 33 passes and 1m37s that ended in 0-3 for Eden Hazard.

It was Madrid's longest goal play in the Champions League out of the 434 recorded by Opta since the 2003/04 season.

That happened against an already defeated team, in the 77th minute. The derby was 0-2 in the 36th minute. Simeone later lamented the lack of aggressiveness of his players: "If you don't have intensity against Madrid, it's very difficult to get it back" .

The Argentine did see that trait in Ancelotti's team, who decided to accept part of Simeone's praise without discussing his reference to counterattacks: “If Simeone has said that we have defended well in low block, I say thank you very much.

It's a compliment".
