The curse of injuries continues to haunt Marco Reus Israel today

2022-09-19T07:19:44.951Z

Every time a major tournament approaches, the Dortmund star loses his place in the German national team due to one injury or another • This time, everyone hopes, he will be back on his feet in time for the World Cup in Qatar

When Marco Reus was replaced and taken off on a stretcher in the 32nd minute of the derby between Dortmund and Schalke, it was hard not to think about what would happen.

In the case of the 33-year-old midfielder, it was even harder not to think about what had already been.

What will happen is the World Cup that will open in 63 days.

Royce injured his ankle, not for the first time in his career, and the hourglass immediately turned.

"It seems that he was injured in the ligaments, but we still don't know exactly what the distinction is," said his coach Edin Terzic at the end of a 0:1 victory that was pushed to the sidelines and added;

"We hope that the restoration will not take very long."

Royce, who also did not provide concrete medical information, left an optimistic message on social media and wrote;

"I'll be back soon! I'm not giving up."

While what will be is the World Cup in Qatar, what will be are all the major tournaments that the Dortmund midfielder has already missed due to injuries.

This combination created a player who seems to be unfazed by misfortune and one that all of Germany - maybe except for Schalke fans - is keeping their fingers crossed that he will be able to recover in time to be with the team at the World Cup.

The first time was in June 2014. Germany had a World Cup preparation game against Armenia, and Reus - who came after a 16-goal season in Dortmund - started in the lineup.

Just before the end of the first half, the midfielder applied pressure in the center of the field, caught a ball, fell, groaned in pain.

It didn't take long until Joachim Lev announced that Reus would miss the tournament in Brazil and that Kordan Mustafi would take his place.

"It's a shame for him and for us," said the German coach at the time, who continued with the team to win the tournament.

When the trophy was lifted, star of the moment Mario Getze held a Reus shirt in his hands.

Two years passed, and Royce returned to his prime.

He provided a season of 20 goals in all formats and was determined to storm Euro 2016. The German team went to a training camp in Ascona, Switzerland, and there another dream of Reus was shattered.

"He has a lot of health problems and right now he is only able to run in a straight line" explained Lev, who once again had to remove the star from the squad.

It was not an easy decision for Lev, but the tests carried out revealed a nagging groin injury.

A year later, he missed out on winning the Confederations Cup.

Royce managed to shake off the pain and doubts, and in good time he was called to the German squad for the World Cup in Russia.

The Dortmund midfielder started in the lineup in all the games, but unfortunately there were only three of them and Germany finished the tournament already in the group stage.

Last summer, Royce already understood the hint on his own, and just before the publication of the final squad - and when he is free of injuries - he published a message on Instagram according to which he is suspending himself.

"After a good season, I decided together with coach Lev not to fly to the Euros."

The goal was to rest properly, arrive sharp for the current season and get on the plane to Qatar in November.

It worked great as he scored three goals and set up another four, but then as mentioned the injury came.

The hours that followed were very tense, but last night the happy news came out: Royce is expected to be absent for about 4 weeks - which will not prevent him from participating in the World Cup.

Now, Royce must complete the rehabilitation properly, return to peak form, and above all do everything to avoid getting injured again.
