Tiktuknu: Summary of the day in sports, 20.9 (Sport1)

The legendary long-distance runner Alexander Sorokin smashed the world record he set himself, when he ran 319 km - in one day. The Lithuanian, an expert in ultra-marathon runs, amazed the running enthusiasts this week when he covered a distance of 319.614 km in 24 hours.

To illustrate, the distance from Tel Aviv to Eilat is about 330 km. For seasoned runners, running a marathon is not an easy challenge, but the Lithuanian actually completed almost eight consecutive marathons - in one day.

Last year, the 40-year-old Sorokin set a record of 309 km in a day, which improved the record considered "unbreakable" - which was set by the Greek Yannis Koros in 1997. However, this time the Lithuanian managed to add another 10 km.

This is a pace of a kilometer in 4:30 minutes - a high pace for an average runner for short distances, but as mentioned Sorokin maintained this pace for 24 hours straight.

"I'm very tired, but also very excited," he said after the run held in Italy, "Thank you for the support, thank you very much, I felt it the whole way."

Sorokin only started running in 2013, when he was trying to lose weight, "I started running just to get in shape, I weighed 100 kg," he says, "I didn't do any sports, I just drank a lot and smoked a lot.

So I started running.

The thing about running is that you can always do more than you're capable of."

In his youth he was a kayaker, but was unable to become a professional because of his lifestyle, which included, as mentioned, a lot of drinking and smoking.

In an interview with the "New York Times" this year, he said: "There is only one word that can be used to define the last hours of such a run: torture."

Maybe that's why he still behaves in an unusual way, and during the runs, in addition to the stimulant drinks, he also drinks Coca-Cola and eats sweet cookies.

"Sometimes junk food is my fuel," he said, "it's full of calories and sodium, and it's exactly what I need when I'm constantly burning endless energy."
