To raise awareness: This is the change that is evident in the NBA Israel today

2022-09-20T06:39:41.995Z

Starting in 2024, mental difficulties will be considered a justified reason for being absent from games • At the same time, the age of registration for the draft will also decrease

Two significant changes are expected to enter into force in the new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA's players' organization and the league's management, according to a report published yesterday (Monday) in the British "Athletic".

As part of the contract, which will enter into force in 2024, the players will be able to justify mental difficulties as a reason for absence from games.

This means that mental issues will be considered a legitimate reason for ineligibility, and teams will not be able to require players to come up to play when such issues arise, so that not only physical injuries will be considered a legitimate reason.

This change is intended to prevent a situation like the one that happened with Ben Simmons at the beginning of last season, when the point guard claimed that he could not play because he was not at his best mentally, and the Philadelphia Sixers fined him for every game in which he did not participate.

Later, the parties reached a financial settlement following a complaint filed by the player.

As we know, senior stars in the league, such as DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Love, have revealed their dealings with mental health crises in recent years, out of a desire to raise awareness of the issue.

Another significant change that is expected to be included in the agreement is the lowering of the minimum age for selection in the draft to 18, and the return of the possibility to select players from high school leagues, as was customary until 2005. In that year, the best league in the world decided to require players who graduated from high school to play at least one year in colleges before they are allowed Register for the draft.

As we know, players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard and Amar'e Stoudemire were among those who made the jump from high school directly to the league, becoming top-tier stars in the industry.
