Roger Federer's farewell event from world tennis may be symbolic and emotional.
The legendary Swiss will retire after this weekend's Leiber Cup tournament, and is planning a surprise final match with his historic rival Rafael Nadal in the doubles tournament.
Last night, Federer finally clarified that he will not play a singles match, due to his physical fitness.
At the same time, he stated that he fantasizes about a doubles match with the Spanish bull, with whom he shared several defining moments in the history of the sport.
According to estimates in Spain, Nadal will make every effort to reach the tournament and fulfill Federer's wish, even though this is an exception to his plan and schedules.
Federer and Vandal teamed up in a doubles match at the 2017 Labor Cup, in what became one of the most memorable moments in their rivalry.
Now they want to reproduce it.
Federer told the German media in an interview yesterday that his retirement announcement was delayed for some time, only because he was unable to publish it.
"Two or three weeks before the announcement, my stomach didn't stop hurting. I postponed everything, because I just wasn't able to. Writing the retirement letter took a lot of energy from me," he said, and said that the decision was made last July.
"A few days after Wimbledon, I realized that this was the end. The condition of my knee just couldn't improve, and I asked myself, 'What is the purpose here?'
I knew that retiring was the right decision."

Also, Federer said that "when I told my children about my plans, they started crying. It was a very difficult moment, because just as my life will change now, theirs will also look different."
In conclusion, Federer hinted at the second career he is planning.
"I want to stay close to the industry. I never thought I'd say this, but becoming a tennis commentator one day suddenly sounds like a good idea. I hated this possibility for years, I promised I wouldn't do it, but maybe someday at Wimbledon it will happen."
