Hertha Berlin winger Jean-Paul Boetius has been diagnosed with a testicular tumor, becoming the fourth Bundesliga player to receive such a diagnosis this season.
The 28-year-old received the news after a urological examination conducted yesterday (Wednesday), and will undergo surgery tomorrow.
Following the results, the player will leave the team's squad.
"Despite the bad news, we are full of hope that Jean-Paul will be able to recover and return to us as soon as possible," said the professional manager, Freddie Bovitch.
"He will receive all possible support from us until his return. The Herta family is by his side and wishes him nothing but the best."
The club said it would provide more information on Boetius' recovery, and asked that the Dutch player's privacy be respected in the meantime.
His teammate, Marco Richter, was diagnosed with a testicular tumor last July.
The 24-year-old Richter underwent treatment and returned to play already at the end of August in a match against Borussia Dortmund and since then managed to register two more appearances in the league.

not the first
Union Berlin defender Timo Baumgertal returned last Sunday in a win over Wolfsburg, five months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
The 26-year-old striker's previous league game was against Eintracht Frankfurt in April.
Dortmund striker Sebastian Heller has been undergoing treatment for a malignant tumor in recent months.
Heller, 28, was forced to leave his team's training camp after the tumor was found 12 days after joining from Ajax on July 6.
