Formula 1 wants and needs to develop further.

In addition to more sprint races, there is also talk of the reverse grid - what exactly does that mean for the future of motorsport?

Monza - The last race in Monza (September 11th) was just being discussed in the Formula 1 world and the upcoming Grand Prix in Singapore (October 2nd) was being raved about, and the racing calendar for the coming season has already been set.

A comeback in Shanghai and a new track in Las Vegas, but the French GP will also be omitted.

With 24 races in the season, there are even two more than the last two years.

In any case, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is enthusiastic: “We are delighted to be able to announce the 2023 calendar with 24 races around the world.

Formula 1 has an unprecedented demand for racing and it's important that we find the right balance for the sport as a whole."

But that's exactly what many fans see differently!

"Quantity over quality, it looks like" writes an Instagram user, many others are worried about the teams and drivers at the many GPs.

Actually, the races should be divided up better in the next few years.

The plan was that there would be less environmental, psychological and physical stress.

However, if you look at the race calendar for 2023, it doesn't really look like it.

Formula 1 CEO Domenicali on the future of the motorsport series

Domenicali has even bigger plans for the coming seasons.

This year there are already three of the controversial sprint races: Imola, Austria and Brazil.

If he has his way, then this mini GP should be even more present.

But not only that, he speaks of bonus points for the fastest in the free practice sessions.

“I want free practice sessions on Friday to be upgraded and maybe points awarded for that.

I want Friday to be more relevant, with a view to a race on Saturday, possibly instead of a third practice session, possibly with the stylistic device of a reversed grid,” said the Formula 1 CEO.

We're talking about the "reverse grid", i.e. the fastest in free practice would then start last in Saturday's race.

The idea of racing in this format has been around for a long time and was also considered in connection with the F1 sprints.

But so far not only fans but also team bosses like Toto Wolf have spoken out against it.

The most important motorsport series in the world should not become a lottery.

But Domenicali sees things differently: “We put a lot of ideas on the table.

A lot of people say no to that, but we've seen a few times that mixed starting grids make for really exciting races with lots of overtaking manoeuvres.

We are almost obliged to try it!”
