DFB-Elf in the individual criticism: Serge Gnabry and David Raum as new problem cases

2022-09-23T21:27:34.167Z

The difficult phase in the club was obvious to the national players of FC Bayern. Serge Gnabry in particular is chasing his form. In the bankruptcy against Hungary hardly any national player reached normal form.

Marc-André ter Stegen (goal):

The goalkeeper of FC Barcelona was (once again) to be regretted in the national team.

He had little to do, and the first real ball he held in his hands he was allowed to get out of his own net.

It's bewitched.

After all, he had two strong saves in the closing stages.

Jonas Hofmann (defence, midfield):

The Gladbacher has continuously increased his standing in the national team, but the evening in Leipzig was a setback for him.

He also didn't manage to put pressure forward from the outside, he had his problems going backwards.

Like the whole team, he also improved after the break when he moved into the offensive row of three.

Antonio Rüdiger (defense):

The giant had a lot to do in the center of defense and did most of it with the usual confidence.

But the fact that he was also largely left to build up the game was a bit much for the New Madrilenian.

Nevertheless: One of the best in a desolate German team in the first half.

Niklas Süle (defense):

Rüdiger's neighbor in the center of defense did his best to prevent things from getting worse.

He blocked and tackled as well as he could.

However, he didn't make much progress as Rüdiger passed him long ago.

David Raum (defense):

He recently blundered at his club RB Leipzig and conceded a goal in Mönchengladbach.

He continued this run seamlessly at the DFB.

He hardly got a reasonable pass to his teammates and lost many duels.

A largely unsuccessful game for the former Hoffenheimer.

His vertical start from the previous season has been stopped for now.

Not good news for the national coach, the external defense remains a problem.

Joshua Kimmich (midfield):

Already in the early stages, he lost possession, muddled a lot of passes and often had to lag behind on the defensive.

He could do far too little to build up the game, not a good game from Munich.

A long-range shot to the side netting was his most striking action.

Ilkay Gündoğan (midfield, up to the 70th minute):

He was busy, you know that from the city pro.

He had more structure in his game than Kimmich, but he didn't succeed enough, especially at the beginning, to boost the offensive game.

The fact that there was more pressure in the German game after the change was mainly due to him.

It's still the old Gündogan song in the DFB-Elf: He has so many qualities, he rarely plays them out.

Substituted after 70 minutes for Jamal Musiala.

Jamal Musiala (midfield, from the 70th minute):

Musiala came on as a substitute against Hungary at last year's European Championship and everything got better from the minute.

Not this time.

Serge Gnabry (midfield, up to the 45th minute):

The Bayern professional wasn't in the game at all, he hardly won any dribbling, once he stumbled over his own legs.

Gnabry is just going through a valley, that's the next bad news for Hansi Flick.

In this form, he is no gain at all for the already weakening offensive.

After 45 minutes it was logically over for him

Thilo Kehrer (defence, from the 46th minute):

Replaced the offensive man Gnabry as a defender in the second half.

And thus had a part in the fact that this half was far better to look at than the first.

He dragged a lot of balls forward, but that was his productive part.

Thomas Müller (midfield, up to 85 minutes):

With a header, which Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulasci was able to pick up without any problems, he at least had the only scene that could remotely be described as a scoring chance in the first 45 minutes.

In his 117th international match and as captain, it could have been a special evening for Müller.

His report card for the evening said: He made an effort.

Lukas Nmecha (attack, from the 85th minute):

The Wolfsburg man came into the game for the last five minutes, a real centre-forward as a crowbar.

The crowbar remained unpacked.

Leroy Sané (midfield):

He has been in good shape at Bayern for weeks, and that evening he was the attacking player who most deserved the name.

At least he made an effort, used a long-range shot once and also got balls from midfield.

Shortly after the break he indicated his goal threat, but Gulasci saved.

Timo Werner (attack, up to the 70th minute):

Flick relies on the Leipziger, on his speed, on his deep runs, but there wasn't much to see that evening.

Werner repeatedly tried to break free, but against these defensively so skilful Hungarians it's just a futile labor of love.

He did better in the second half, even getting through to the goalkeeper once.

He left the field after 70 minutes.

Kai Havertz (attack, from the 70th minute):

The offensive player from Chelsea came onto the field for the last 20 minutes and immediately provided a breath of fresh air.

But he couldn't force the goal either.

Hansi Flick (coach):

It has to happen at some point: the national coach's first defeat.

Flick still has a lot of work to do and little time.

Doable, but not the best combination.
