Before the important Bundesliga game against Leverkusen, FC Bayern defender Matthijs de Ligt was only allowed to watch his national team play both games.
Munich – During the international break, those responsible and the professionals at FC Bayern have some time to process the latest results.
Three draws and an embarrassing defeat at FC Augsburg caused a sporting crisis for the record champions.
While the bosses went into the analysis together with coach Julian Nagelsmann, some players, such as Sadio Mané, were able to clear their heads with their national teams.
However, it was different with star newcomer Matthijs de Ligt.
FC Bayern star Matthijs de Ligt only plays irregularly - now he has to replace Hernández
The central defender came from Juventus Turin in the summer for 67 million euros, but he hasn't really arrived in Munich yet.
In FC Bayern's eleven competitive games to date, de Ligt has played five times more than 90 minutes, but once in the first round of the DFB Cup.
There were also three short appearances and a substitution after a good 75 minutes against Inter Milan.
In the Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg and in the 2-0 home win in the Champions League against FC Barcelona, he even didn't play on the substitutes' bench.
Although de Ligt recently fought its way into Julian Nagelsmann's starting eleven, the team was unsuccessful in those Bundesliga appearances.
The 23-year-old will most likely start the upcoming games due to Lucas Hernández's injury, although he has not gained any practice in recent games.
Because with the Dutch national team, de Ligt was twice on the bench for more than 90 minutes in the decisive Nations League games.
Matthijs de Ligt has not played in the last two internationals.
FC Bayern: No use for de Ligt in the national team – he will probably start for FCB on Friday
Ex-FC Bayern coach Louis van Gaal's team only won 2-0 in Poland last Thursday, followed by a 1-0 win against neighbors Belgium on Sunday.
The Netherlands thus underpinned their lead in the table and qualified for the final tournament of the Nations League.
De Ligt watched both Elftal games from the bench, so the Bayern defender returns to Munich without a single second of match practice.
