We already understood Kyrie Irving's willingness to go the extra mile with his refusal to get vaccinated against the corona virus in the 2021/22 season, when the Brooklyn Nets star lost all home games until the end of March due to New York's vaccination policy.

However, tonight (between Monday and Tuesday) Irving talked about the concession he made financially in order to stand behind that decision.

"I gave up $100 million in a four-year contract extension basically in my decision not to get vaccinated," Kyrie said during the Nets' media day.

"There was a certain amount of uncertainty about my future, whether I would be in this league, whether I would be in this team. So I had to deal with these real life circumstances, of losing my job because of this decision."

The 30-year-old Irving, who exercised the option for a fourth year in his contract and will earn 36.5 million dollars in the coming season, said that he felt that Brooklyn's insistence on the vaccination was an ultimatum for him to sign the contract extension with the team: "We were supposed to close everything before training camp, and it's just not Happened because of this whole issue of vaccinated or not vaccinated. I understood their position and had to live with it. It was a hard pill to swallow, to be honest."

The general manager of the Nets, Sean Marks, commented on the words of the guard at the press conference: "We will not give any ultimatum here. We want all the people here to be reliable. The point is not to give an ultimatum to a person to get vaccinated. It is a completely personal choice. I Supports Kyrie. As soon as the restrictions regarding vaccinations came in and we knew it would affect the home games, then the talks about the contract stalled."

Marks added: "I hear what he said and my conclusion is that he is committed. He understands that in order to be a free agent and get what he deserves, he has to show commitment. We are happy to support him in any way possible during the upcoming season, to make sure he is healthy and ready to play ".
