The EA Schongau starts the new Bayernliga season with an enlarged squad.

The preparation was bumpy at times, coach Rainer Höfler finds clear words.

Schongau – The preparations for the new season in the Bavarian ice hockey league at EA Schongau did not go quite as well as hoped.

The start of the test game series, with the victory in Geretsried, was still decent.

After that, the “mammoths” lacked bite and attitude.

However, against teams from the lower regional league, such as Fürstenfeldbruck and most recently Germering, it was enough to win.

In the upper division EV Füssen and against league competitor Peißenberg, however, it was defeated.

Trainer Rainer Höfler described the performances as "much too pomadig".

"We're in a better position than last year and then we play wildly defensively," said the 55-year-old angrily.

"We were the better team for 40 minutes against Peißenberg, but every mistake we made was punished," says Höfler about the 7-3 home defeat against the "Miners".

“A few think it will just go on like this, but nobody is interested in the successes of the past year.” He now expects a different attitude from his squad at the start of the league game.

The successes of the last year are no longer of interest to anyone.

However, the Schongauer also had to struggle with difficult circumstances in the preparation.

The ice was prepared later than planned in their own stadium – the energy crisis triggered by the Russian war of aggression also played a role in this.

As a result, more rented ice ages were needed abroad.

"We also had to change the training camp," added Höfler, who has a few new faces in the squad.

The contingent positions are taken by two Canadians

Only three departures face six newcomers.

With Tristan Gangnon and Samy Paré, the Schongau team are counting on two young Canadian strikers for the contingent positions.

In addition, there were three attackers from neighboring clubs, Jonas Schwarzfischer, Tobias Estermaier and Marcus Köpf.

For the defensive, the EAS secured the services of the veteran Lubos Velebny, who has the experience of almost 300 league games.

"All the new ones are okay," says Höfler, who still sees potential for improvement in all of them.

Otherwise, the “mammoths” largely kept their herd together.

In the case are Daniel Blankenburg and Philipp Wieland.

As in the previous season, the two goalies will take turns.

The EAS defense is almost unchanged with the strong attacking Daniel Holzmann, Philipp Keil, Leonhard Zink, Mathias Schuster, Tobias Findl and youngster Stefan Saal.

If necessary, the all-rounders Jonas Lautenbacher and Fritz Weinfurtner can also be deployed in defence.

On the offensive, Marius Klein, Florian Höfler, Simon Maucher, Matthias Müller, Willy Knebel and Florian Seelmann should provide goals.

In addition, the Schongauer have extended the cooperation with the EV Füssen.

This means that four young players with a promotion license can also be used by the “Mammuts” from the old master.

Höfler is confident about the season.

"If we convince as a team, we can also beat good opponents," he says, but admits: "We will certainly not beat an opponent in a playful way, we have to fight hard for every win." His goal is to reach the play-offs, that is at least eighth place.

But it won't be easy with 14 competitors in the Bayernliga.

"I think the league has gotten stronger," says Höfler.

Some clubs would have strengthened enormously.

Whereby Höfler fears that there could be a two-class society in the league.

"I see seven to eight teams in front, and the rest, which is then much weaker," says Höfler, who locates his squad in the upper half.

At the start of the season, the "Mammuts" have to deal with an opponent that Höfler considers as a direct competitor for a play-off spot: On Sunday (5.30 p.m.) the EAS will be visiting the River Rats Geretsried.

Schongau had won the first friendly against them 5:3.
