Werder Bremen have won against Borussia Mönchengladbach for the first time in seven years (eleven games) in the Bundesliga.
On Saturday evening, Bremen won 5-1 (4-0) in their own stadium with goals from Niclas Füllkrug (5th and 13th minutes), Marvin Ducksch (8th), Mitchell Weiser (72nd) and an own goal by Gladbach's Ramy Bensebaini (37th).
Marcus Thuram scored for the guests (63rd).
Werder climbed up to eighth place in the table, one position ahead of Gladbach.
Both clubs are level on points with twelve points, but Bremen has the better goal difference after the direct duel.
The initial phase was a spectacle that completely overwhelmed the guests.
Romano Schmid first made room for a cross to the second post with a quick turn in the left half-space, which Niclas Füllkrug used to take the lead (5th).
Then the preparer himself got into a good position, but the rushing Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer grabbed the ball off Schmid's foot.
Ducksch was correct and immediately increased to 2:0 (8th).
It continued with a misguided header from Ramy Bensebaini, which gave Ducksch the ball.
In the penalty area, he kept the ball against Marvin Friedrich and put it across to Füllkrug.
He pushed in for his seventh goal of the season (13th).
It was the fastest 3-0 lead in Bremen's Bundesliga history - and Anthony Jung would have almost followed suit if Sommer hadn't parried his shot (16').
Gladbach fights in vain
Despite the catastrophic start, Gladbach did not give up.
Christoph Kramer narrowly missed the goal after a cross (18'), Werder keeper Jiří Pavlenka prevented the 1:3 against Joseph Scally (20').
The game was balanced, Gladbach tended to have more game shares.
However, Bremen still had dangerous chances, for example when Weiser crossed perfectly to the first post, where Ducksch headed unprotected, but shot too imprecisely (29').
At the latest with an own goal by Bensebaini (37th), the game was decided.
In a strong phase for the guests, Thuram still scored a consolation goal for Gladbach (63rd), and for a few minutes a second goal for Borussia seemed possible.
With his first goal of the season, Bremen's Weiser stifled Gladbach's hopes of a comeback and made the final score (73').
