The French defender had been fired from the Andalusian club because of his weight considered too important. The former Rennes player had brought the case before

Over 100kg.

According to Sevilla FC, this is the weight reached by French defender Joris Gnagnon at the time of his dismissal for "lack of professionalism" in 2021 when he had two years left on his contract.

Faced with this decision, the player then decided to seize FIFA on the grounds of "unfair dismissal".

This Friday, the international football body issued its decision and ruled in favor of the Andalusian club.

"The FIFA litigation chamber has rejected the complaint lodged by the former player of Sevilla FC, Joris Gnagnon", can we read in the club's official press release which adds that the former Rennes player was asking him for a sum of 4.6 millions of euros.

"According to this decision, Sevilla FC will not have to pay any compensation to the player, who can always appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)", concludes the press release.

No matches played since December 2020

Now that's the whole point.

Will Joris Gnagnon want to continue the proceedings against his former club?

The fact remains that, for the time being, the former international hopeful is without a club after his anecdotal loan to AS Saint-Étienne last season.

In Forez, Joris Gnagnon did not play a single minute in an official match.

Weight as a reason for dismissal, a first

Great hope of French football in his early days, Gnagnon had established himself as a boss of the Rennes defense between 2016 and 2018. Then transferred to Seville against 15 million euros, the defender never won in Andalusia, therefore weighed down by his weight problems.

After an inconclusive return to Rennes on loan, Gnagnon has not appeared on a football pitch since December 2020. A descent into hell that continues with this unfavorable FIFA decision.

This is also the first time that the excessive weight of a player has been taken as a valid reason for dismissal.
