The DFB team is missing a real centre-forward.

Now Stefan Reuter, world champion from 1990, brought up a candidate for the offensive.

Munich - In about a month and a half, the World Cup will begin in Qatar, and the German national team will play their first group game against Japan on November 23rd.

Although there is still no exact date on which the respective national coaches will nominate their squads, the respective announcements are expected at the end of October.

National coach Hansi Flick could certainly take surprise candidates to the World Cup in his first major tournament as the person in charge.

DFB squad: Stefan Reuter sees Berisha as the "much-cited surprise candidate"

On the weekend before the international break, FC Augsburg surprisingly inflicted their first defeat of the season on Bayern Munich.

One of the central figures was Mergim Berisha, the 24-year-old new signing from the Fuggerstadt team made it 1-0 and demonstrated his goalscoring qualities in the German upper house for the first time.

According to the managing director of the Augsburger, the world and European champion Stefan Reuter, the Berchtesgadener even has the format for the national team.

At least that's what Reuter indicated in a recent interview with the

editorial network Germany

and brought the 24-year-old into play as a World Cup candidate.

The attacker, who was loaned out by top Turkish club Fenerbahce Istanbul for the current season, "could be the much-cited surprise candidate," said Reuter, who himself made 69 appearances for the national team.

Although the 55-year-old knows about the abilities of the offensive players in the DFB team, he still gives Berisha a chance given his qualities.

“There is enormous quality in the national team, and the national coach has a lot of choices, especially on the offensive.

But he can't yet know what condition the players will be in in November," said the ex-professional.

"Mergim is really good at football, extremely dangerous and has shown from day one that he can hold his own against top central defenders."

But would Berisha be a direct help?

Except for the last hapless Timo Werner and Lukas Nmecha, who was injured with the national team, there was no real center forward in Flick's last squad.

The lack of attackers is also noticeable on the field, as was evident in the 1-0 defeat by Hungary.

Significantly, two midfielders, Ilkay Gündogan and Kai Havertz, scored for Germany in the 3-3 win against England.

Berisha, who trained at Red Bull Salzburg's academy, is quite experienced for his 24 years.

The U21 European champion appeared in a total of 58 competitive games for the Austrian Bundesliga champions and scored 24 times and added 15 assists.

He also successfully scored goals for the Salzburg reserve, FC Liefering and the Austrian professional clubs SCR Altach and LASK.

The 1.88-metre man joined Fenerbahce in 2021 for five million, where he contributed eight goals and three assists in 32 games.

They were not completely satisfied with him there, which is why he is now playing on loan in his home country of Germany.

DFB squad for the 2022 World Cup: Some names in focus, but who will be nominated?

It could still be a little too early to make the leap into the national team, Berisha's last appearance for the DFB dates from the U21 European Championship final in June 2021 against Portugal.

In addition, he has not yet been nominated for the senior national team.

On the other hand, he could provide the hoped-for fresh breeze in the stuffy German attacking game for exactly this reason.

The names Niklas Füllkrug and Simon Terodde were recently mentioned in this context, but Kevin Volland's dream of winning the World Cup was shattered after his injury.
