Can a footballer go on vacation during the season?

I'm torn: personal development versus team spirit.

Can a footballer go on vacation during the season?

They used to use the four-week window between the end of the season and preparation for this.

They still do today.

The problem, however, is that they see their trip to Malle as a football debriefing and join thousands of amateur footballers in reminiscing about the greatest or worst season of all time - depending on whether the alcohol makes you euphoric or a whiner.

But the bottom line is: That can't have been it - with the vacation.

Then it's almost logical that a trip with a friend, a long weekend with the relatives in Buxtehude and various fun tours with the Malle buddies follow.

is this really ok

No, says the footballer in me,

who in over 20 years has only missed three league games because of vacation: at the wedding (but my wife still started the initiative) and during the honeymoon.

Well, thinks the father and trainer that I am too.

The youngsters now also have other nice things on their minds, such as crossing the Alps or other sporting challenges.

You just have to see how many soccer players took part in the Xletix obstacle course or the Erdinger city triathlon this year.

The possibilities are completely different.

In addition, many years ago a wise football coach from Lengdorf once said: “Football can only be a minor matter, at least up to the district league.

It's a hobby, nothing more."

That's why I decided to see the whole thing positively

, because the young people get further training and gain experience.

And because all teams are equally affected anyway.

Therefore - and even if I have a different view of a team sport - here comes the slightly modified sentence of another football sage (not from Lengdorf): "Let's go and just play football!"

Exceptions prove the rule.

Not meant are shopping tours in Milan or to Primemark in Innsbruck or Ikea in Eching, wine festivals in Bardolino, bachelor parties.

I also find it difficult to attend a dog school for several days.

Also on the grounds that one can only recover from the hard job with an extensive fishing trip.

"I'm on wellness" also sounds strange, and the 80th birthday of the third grandmother anyway.

None of this is made up, it's stories that coaches told me.

They can create whole hit parades of curious reasons for rejection (more about that in the next sports whisper).

They range from "Our baby is getting his first teeth" to "I can't get my shoes on with my blisters".

That makes the coaches a bit tired.

But sometimes it cheers her up.

Benji Tas remembers a player who canceled "because it's my father's birthday and there's a big party coming up".

He wasn't there on the day of the game – unlike his dad.

"He watched us and didn't know anything about his own birthday party." What do I recommend to said player?

A preparation at the FC Lengdorf mentioned here several times.

A different wind is blowing, as player-coach Franco Soave felt himself.

In the training camp, he and striker Mathias Holzer had only overslept one training session.

"Which cost us a sow straight away." Loud!
