Tiktukno: summary of today's events in sports, 2.10 (Sport1)

Some are already defining it as the "heaviest football disaster of all time": the death toll in the football game in Indonesia increases as the hours tick by, and slowly the dimensions of the horror become clear.

The latest official reports tell of at least 139 dead and over 200 injured - most of them in critical condition, with severe and life-threatening injuries.

The riot started at the end of the game in which Persabaya defeated Arma 2:3, when the fans of the losing team broke into the grass and the police responded with tear gas.

These caused many people to be trampled and suffocated - this is what the East Java police chief in the country, Niko Afinta, said.

The hooligans also raised the spirits.

In the videos from the event, the police are seen spraying a huge amount of tear gas, sowing panic and panic in the stands.

Now it turns out that the spraying of tear gas in stadiums was banned by FIFA many years ago. This was the cause of the previous major disaster that occurred in the stadium in Accra, the capital of Ghana, in 2001, in which 126 people died.

The senior police officer at the event told the news agency "Reuters" that the spraying of the gas The tear was intended to stop the "anarchy" in the stands. "There was complete chaos, and we had to take significant steps.

The fans went wild, broke into the field and attacked police officers.

Outside the stadium, they torched police vehicles and caused massive damage.

There was no choice but to use advanced means to disperse the crowd," he explained. When asked if he was aware that FIFA regulations forbid the spraying of tear gas in the stands, he evaded.

Another omission concerns the amount of the crowd that stayed in the stadium.

According to officials, 42,000 tickets were sold for the game - even though the capacity of the stadium is only 38,000 seats.

According to estimates, the specific stand targeted by the tear gas - which was sprayed in a huge amount - was more than 120 percent populated.

This is one of the main reasons for the high number of dead and wounded.

Warning: harsh images

Be that as it may, it is clear that alongside the violence of the hooligans that is increasing in Indonesian football (last year a fan of one of the teams was murdered during a confrontation with rival fans), the conduct of the police took a heavy toll.

An eyewitness at the stadium spoke in an interview to the "CNN" network about the horrific images from the stadium, and said that "I saw dozens of children's bodies lying around the stadium. The amount of tear gas was so massive that the bodies turned completely blue."

According to additional testimonies, the rescue forces that arrived at the scene had difficulty controlling the incident, first of all they removed the bodies and left many wounded in the field in a serious condition, with some dying.

The chaos also continued in the hospitals in the area, which were not prepared for a disaster of this magnitude and had difficulty receiving the injured.

The first wounded to receive treatment were patients who were defined as being in critical condition due to a lack of oxygen supply to the brain.

The consequences of the disaster could be far-reaching for Indonesian football.

According to reports in the country, FIFA may remove the local association permanently due to the violation of the organization's safety procedures. Whether FIFA chooses the extreme step or not, hosting the U-20 World Cup for which the Israeli national team has also qualified, which should take place in May and June of the year next, is now in great doubt and the chances are increasing that the tournament will be moved to another country.

In addition, the possibility of hosting the Asian Championship, which was on the agenda, already seems very far away.
