In Russia, the ban on Shafi Suleimanov from taking off with Hapoel Beer Sheva for a game against Lech Poznan was widely commented: "Cowards, they never liked us."

When you look at the history, the enmity and the public opinion on the street, you realize that the cup holder's attempt to change the decision had no chance

Voila system!

Summary: Maccabi Netanya - Hapoel Beer Sheva 2:1 (Sport1)

Hapoel Be'er Sheva left for Poland this morning (Monday) without Shafi Suleimanov, in a move that was widely covered in the Russian media.

The Polish authorities refuse to allow Russian citizens into their territory starting about two weeks ago, and the cup holder will host Lech Poznan in the Conference League without the winger who does not hold an additional passport.

"Shafi wants to participate in every game, especially in the European factories," said his agent Alan Aguzarov yesterday: "He had a high ambition for Lech Poznan and he wanted to be with the team in this game, but it is not up to him."

Suleimanov is the first footballer at this level to be refused and this is probably the reason for the echoes.

This is no longer a training camp or a friendly match, but a match in a European factory - which has caused publicists in Russia to claim in the last 24 hours that UEFA gives a hand to discrimination. Journalist Marat Ramzanov yesterday raised accusations of "Russophobia" and wrote that "the Poles want to hurt the Russians and those who suffer This is an Israeli soccer team."

Hapoel Beer Sheva, for its part, made efforts to get permission for its Russian citizen and, very unsurprisingly, did not succeed.

The club from the capital of the Negev is obliged to work for itself and its employee, but with all due respect to the holder of the Israeli soccer cup, the picture is much broader than a game in the Conference League.

When it comes to Poland and Russia, only much greater intervention can change such a decision.

In his homeland they shout again: "This is Russophobia".

On September 22, four members of the European Union decided;

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, prohibit the entry of Russian citizens into their territory.

These are four countries with a long and painful relative history with Russia, some of which feel threatened by it even now.

The tip of the fork is on the tip, and that's only the tip: relations between Warsaw and Moscow have been tense for decades and if someone wants to put their finger on a certain event in the last 100 years, they should go back to September 17, 1939 (because you can also browse to the year 1605).

Talk to a Pole about the invasion of Nazi Germany on September 1, 1939, and he will probably answer: "And don't forget there was another invasion 16 days later."

Add the Katyn Forest Massacre and you get a picture that is distinctly etched in the Polish national memory.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, relations improved, but not for long.

Poland supports every "Western" process that Ukraine is trying to go through in the last 20 years, while Russia blatantly interferes in the other direction and the neighbor's distance from the European bloc.

Many in Poland are still convinced that Russia is behind the plane crash in which President Lech Kaczynski and other politicians were killed and also behind the migrant crisis on the border with Belarus.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine last February has already brought back the hostility without barriers, and those who think that this is only a political matter are wrong;

Russia is despised on the Polish street.

Surveys conducted in recent months revealed that approximately 70 percent of respondents fear that Putin will try to invade their territory as well, through Kaliningrad on the northern border.

"Poland never liked us. They will do everything to hurt us, I'm not surprised that they don't allow Suleimanov to enter," said yesterday the player of the Russian volleyball team, Alexei Spiridonov.

Not sure he's wrong.

Among the European countries, Poland is trying to lead the most aggressive line against Russia in recent months - and it is also the one that provides the most support to the Ukrainian refugees (relative to its capacity).

It has become home to more than 3.5 million refugees and as a country that is generally not a fan of foreigners, it actually gives warm treatment to those who came from the eastern borders.

Robert Lewandowski announced a few weeks ago that in the 2022 World Cup he will wear a yellow-blue captain's armband (as the colors of the Ukrainian flag) and then received one from Andriy Shevchenko in a photographed and publicized meeting - so that no one will be in doubt as to who is on whose side.

In addition, the national team of Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv host their home games in the continental arena in Warsaw and Krakow.

If anyone has forgotten, when UEFA and FIFA were still trying to figure out who was against whom, Poland already announced that it would boycott the playoff games against Russia in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The direction is clear: in favor of Ukraine and especially against (Putin's) Russia, with all its might.

So surely Spiridonov was not surprised that Suleimanov got a stop sign.

Talks like "it is forbidden to mix politics and sports" sound ridiculous when referring to Poland and Russia today, because it is simply impossible.

Until last summer, every season 4-6 Poles played in the Russian league, but today there is only one left: Machei Rivos, who is married to a Russian and has lived in the country for a decade.

When it became clear that he was not going to leave the Russian league and signed with Spartak Moscow, he was thrown out of the Polish national team.

Sebastian Shimansky was at the center of a campaign by football fans in his homeland to be removed from the national team a few months ago and as soon as the 2021/22 season ended, he left the Russian league.

The rest of the Poles did the same, except Ribos.

The chairman of the Sambo (martial art) association of Russia, Renat Laishev, said yesterday: "The Poles have revealed their cowardly face, they are simply cowards and there is no other word.

Our athletes have always been better than the Poles - they are afraid of us, so they drag politics onto the field."

A similar problem arose recently when the Czech Republic decided to make it difficult for Russian citizens to enter its territory - less than a month before an exhibition game in Prague between the ice hockey teams Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks.

The NHL threatened to cancel the arrival in the Czech capital and at the end of the week it was decided to approve the entry of the Russian players of both teams.

Poland is among the leaders of the line, but in Russia they wonder if the precedent that Efi Suleimanov will lead to similar cases in the future - in other European countries, not only in football.

In Israel, in any case, there is no such problem and Hapoel Beer Sheva can continue to enjoy the outstanding winger.
